Jace and Jay give a rundown on some of the books they have read for the week of June 9, 2021 spoiler-free. Maniac of New York concludes, but it is only the end of the first story arc. There is more Harry coming! Bunny Mask is an incredibly engaging and intriguing story that will pull you right in. Geiger fills on more of the the backstory of our main character, plus it shows us that Geiger may be one of those people who need to bed needed. Babyteeth continues to be fantastic in its return. The story has always balanced he action with incredible relationship drama and that hasn't changed. Ant may not have been worth the wait, we will let you decide, but knowing Erik Larson is brining her back is welcome news. The Good Asian is a good read! Perfectly period noir with accurately depicted racial strife that is all too relatable, great book! Finally Jace also lets you know what other books are out this week you may want to be on the lookout for. 

Jace chats with Jordan Plosky, CEO of Zoop, a new crowd -funding platform for comics. Zoop handles all the logistical challenges of marketing, fulfilling and running the campaign. This frees up the creators to just create. Plus Zoop only gets paid if the campaign is successful so they have a very vested interest in getting projects over the line. The platform essentially performs like other crowd-funding sites, but brings in so much more simplicity and each campaign is custom tailored to best suit the needs of that creator or creative team. Currently the platform is live with it's first project, Slow City Blues, with many more projects to come in the new future. Even some creators who have been regulars on other crowd-funding platforms are making the switch to Zoop. Listen in for all the details.

Jace and Rocky from the Comic Boom! YouTube channel talk about the latest DC books. There are so many great titles this week starting with Batman Urban Legends #4, the Red Hood and Grifter stories continue to be absolutely amazing. We get a fun look at Luke Fox back in the Batwing costume and the first of a three part Tim Drake Robin story. Meanwhile the emotionality and action of the Justice League's last adventure continues in Justice League Last Ride #2 and the art is spectacular. Rorschach #9 doesn't move the narrative forward in a big way, but the visual storytelling is superb and it feels like the clues are starting to line up. Batman The Detective #3 gives a welcome look at a young Bruce Wayne traveling the world and learning some manhunting skills, the guys both would love a series focused solely on this period of Batman's training. Over in Detective Comics #1037, Bruce Wayne has actually been accused of murder and arrested. Doesn't the GCPD now better by now? One of the back-ups starts a big debate about Lucius Fox and had Jace all fired up! Wonder Woman #773 might not resolve the Norse storyline in the most mythic & impactful of ways, but the story is wildly entertaining and feels authentic. Also the last page view of Themyscira is a great cliffhanger. Joker #4 has more of the actual Joker in it than any of the previous issues and the guys are divided on whether that's a good thing or not. Future State Gotham #2 teases a chance at redemption for Jason Todd, but is it too little, too late?

Jace chats with the creative team for a new crowd-funded project, Slow City Blues. The story follows a detective who is trapped in his own imagination after some tragic events in the real world. A story that explores loss, grief and self-acceptance set in a fantasy world with incredible artwork. Not only is this a new project, it is the debut project for a new crowdfunding platform called Zoop. This new company will handle all the logistical parts of crowd-funding campaigns and leave the creators free to create. Be sure to go and check out the project on Zoop!

Jace chats with Mitch Hallock, creator of Terrificon a true COMIC-con returning at the end of July. They guys chat about the challenges of bringing back a convention post-Covid. Also the comic-centric nature of Terrificon and how that informs what guests are invited and the panels and programming offered at the show. There are tons of great guests coming to the show for 2021 and lots of vendors with some amazing comics, collectibles and more. Jace is joined by veteran comic book creator John Livesay to chat about all sort so things. John gives a brief history of his childhood love of comics and how he acquired so many of the great books he is constantly sharing on Twitter. We also hear how he went from writer to penciller to inker. There's talk about the current state of inking and how it has changed over the years. Plus John teases his upcoming creator owned comic Slow City Blues.

Jace welcomes comic creator Erica Schultz to the show to discuss her current Kickstarter campaign for The Deadliest Bouquet. When the mother of three women dies under mysterious circumstances the sisters must reunite to solve her murder all the while dealing with the consequence of their upbringing that including being trained to hunt Nazis. Skills passed down from one generation to the next, including grueling physical training makes for a very unorthodox childhood & leaves the sisters with complicated emotions for their mother, especially now that she is gone. In a word, despite the action and mystery contained in this original graphic novel, this story is about relationships. We all deal with loss in our own ways and we all certainly have relationships in our lives. From these touch points, this creative team hopes to bring this entertaining narrative to life. From the gorgeous 90's inspired cover by Kevin Wada to the beautiful interior and covers, you should definitely check this project out!

Jace and Jay talk about some of the titles that are hitting comic shops the week of June 2, 2021. Amazing Spider-Man #67 has a very classic Spider-Man, but Jace is hoping we get to the end of some of the many plot threads that are playing out in the title currently. Nocterra spends some time on quiet moments and has some great characterization, but this month's issue also really brings some hardcore action! Can't wait to see what happens next. Dep Beyond #5 gives us a look at what is on the other side of the portal and really shows how far the series has come in only a few issues. Out of Body #1 from AfterShock is surprisingly grounded for a book that deals with the supernatural. It has both an ethereal and procedural feel, fantastic work by the creative team. Inkblot is just a while lot of fun, exactly the book you would expect starring a fantastical and possible mythical cat. Speaking of cats, Black Cat #7 shows the heart of Felicia Hardy with gorgeous artwork. This character has come so far from her Spider-Man sidekick days. Iron Man Annual #1 does such an incredible job of establishing a start to the Infinite Destinies narrative it has convinced Jace to go all in. Also the art is SPECTACULAR! Heroes Reborn #5 is ok, but Jace worries about the inconsistency in art and story for the event overall. Crush and Lobo gets Jay's stamp of approval, he also feels like the characterization of Crush is authentic. Immortal Hulk #47 has us very close to the end of this series and it feels like its time to take the Hulk in a different direction, but we can't wait to see how this one ends first! Jay's Book of the Week is Star Wars War of the bounty Hunters #1, based on the strength of this issue, Jay is going all in on this event. We love how much it enriches the character & story points we know from the films and even adds to the Star Wars film canon. Also we are reminded in this issue what a bad ass Boba Fett is! All this, plus Jace runs down some other titles you may want to pick up this week.

Jace and Manny talk about the last two prelude issues for the Star Wars War of the Bounty Hunter event. We check out Doctor Aphra #10 and wonder how the events of that book and the characters are going to collide with Boba Fett, Han Solo, Darth Vader and all the rest of the bounty hunters caught up in this intricate collision course of a story. Darth Vader #12 is a much easier narrative to predict as it adds so much to the canon of the original fil trilogy in it's examination of how Vader sees Han Solo. A constant thorn in Vader's side, it is never more apparent than in this comic how much Darth Vader wants Han to pay for the times he has thwarted the Sith lords plans or helped Luke out of harms way.

The jury is still out, but both guys think he is the most intriguing character in the book so far. The latest Batman Fortnite Zeropoint issue is a blast and shows off both Batman's leadership skills and his ability to play straight man to a good dose of humor. Speaking of Batman, the journey towards the Magistrate continues in the Caped Crusaders regular title, but we get plenty of Harley and Ghost Maker also. Swamp Thing #4 feels familiar as it leans into the mythos of the character very well and we get a not surprising, but not necessarily welcome cameo on the last page. Crush and Lobo had the guys very divided with Rocky seeing it as a missed opportunity while Jace very much enjoyed reading about Lobo's daughter for the first time. Justice League was solid, but once again the back up of Justice League Dark outshone the main story. Batman Catwoman had an awesome Harley vs Selina fight, but the alternating timelines have the overall story moving rather slowly so we still aren't quite sure what the point of it all is yet. Suicide Squad finished up the Red X crossover and the guys rather enjoyed it. Red X seems more formidable than we first expected which leads the guys to some guesses about who he might be. Green Lantern #3 is the best issue yet. We get some solid, relatable and very authentic characterization of John Stewart, a very intriguing look at what is happening amongst the wreckage of the Corps on PA and a tease that Hal Jordan may just be the Lantern that can help save the day. Finally The Nice House on the Lake #1 is a perfect first issue. An ensemble cast we meet to varying degrees, an antagonist who is suitably mysterious and a big event at the end that pushes the narrative forward in a big way. This is the kind of book that can keep you up at night thinking about what you would do if you found yourself amidst these events. The art is also suitably beautiful and creepy. Jace chats with legendary comic creator Jim Starlin about his return to the drawing board and his most recent project that brings back his creation Vanth Dreadstar. They guys are joined by Jim's inker Jaime Jameson who talks about bringing some modern ideas to the project. Jim also mentions that working on this project has brought other ideas for future Dreadstar stories back and he has plans to do more crowd-funded projects with Dreadstar. Also Jim mentions felling even stronger now in terms of recovering from his injury than when he first started the project. It seems like comic fans will be lucky enough to see more future Jim Starlin artwork. Jace welcomes comic creators Sina Grace and V Ken Marion to the show. The guys chat about their favorite Flash artists of all -time and why they are choosing them. There are many legendary names on everyone's lists and some surprises as well. What is really interesting is those surprises may have drawn very little Flash, but we certainly hope we see more Flash work from them in the future based on what pieces we have seen. Also the recent DC Round Robin online poll gave readers a chance to vote for what upcoming series they would like to see. The project Sina and V Ken pitched, an action-packed Kyle Raynor and Kilowog story mad it to the final four before losing out to a Robin project. The creators take a bit about the process of being involved with the poll and their hopes that the story eventually sees the light of day. It's a really fun episode filled with the joy of comics so we hope you all enjoy it.

Jace chats with writer and creator Marc Bernardin about his incredibly successful Kickstarter for his upcoming short film Splinter. They discuss how Marc came up with the idea and his choice to crowdfund the project. Marc also discuss his choices in casting and how he arrived at the decision to go with a mostly female cast. There is plenty of Twilight Zone talkas the guys talk about marc drawing inspiration from that classic series when conceiving his stories and they even breakdown some favorite episodes. Plus lots of talk about the campaign itself, rewards and the Splinter community which has grown around this project.

Jace talks about a ton of books he read for this week and gives his spoiler free thoughts. Blue Flame from Vault comics makes it's long awaited debut and although some of the Sci-Fi idea have been seen before they are presented in a new, thoughtful and what we expect to be an emotional way. Great start to this series, very intriguing. Helm Greycastle continues the mash-up of high fantasy with ancient Aztec history, plus there are some RPG resources included so you can play your own Helm Greycastle campaign. Star Wars Doctor Aphra and Darth Vader both tie into the War of the Bounty Hunters event and provide some set-up and context for that story. Nuclear Family #4 gives us guessing in the best way about what might happen next. With only one issue to go, we still aren't sure where the creative team is taking us and we love that! The Clone Sage gets started in earnest in Miles Morales, Spider-Man #26 and it feels like it will be much more intensely focused and faster paced than the original. Black Widow has become the best title Marvel is putting out, from the gorgeous art to the best most authentically depicted Natasha we have ever read, stunningly good. Department of Truth #9 gives us some insight into just how the Department manipulates and controls people's beliefs and has Cole wonder if he should be involved with the DOT after all. The emotionality of Shadow Doctor continues and sets up what we expect will be a remarkable final issue. Shadecraft #3 has Zadie learning a lot of about how to use her powers and that some of the shadows she has encountered may not be what she thinks they are. These revelations could change everything she thought she knew. Shadowman #2 gives us a confidant hero who feels powerful in the hands of this creative team, curious to see how they will challenge him going forward, Alien #3 features the return of a fan favorite character from the Alien franchise and we can't wait to see what happens next. The final issue of the Maestro War & Pax mini has the Maestro facing off against Doom and that fight is everything we expected it to be. Made in Korea is a fascinating look at a future world where humans are no longer able to conceive children, but there are other mysteries afoot that we haven't gotten all the details for ... yet. The Girls of Dimension 13 #2 is a fun magic-filled story and with the team about to be forced into using magical abilities they haven't fully trained with, things could get messy in a hurry. All four of this weeks Heroes Reborn titles are solid and continue to show us familair characters in new was, as we have come to expect from this alternate reality tale. Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom! talk about the DC offerings for the week of May 25, 2021. Detective Comics #1036 continues to focus on Bruce Wayne and Batman as they acclimate to their new neighborhood while trying to solve the mystery of the recent string of murders in Gotham. Strange Adventures #10 purports to contain big revelations, but we aren't so convinced what Tom King is telling us is true. Jace has his own theory about what's really going on. Batman Superman #18 feels like the story should be starting to wind down for Rocky, but Jace thinks based on the most recent information we get in this issue, we are still in for at least 3 more issues. Both guys feel like Action Comics #1031 is a step in the right direction in terms of narrative and the art is spectacular. Harley Quinn still has Rocky's attention, but Jace is ready to jump ship as the story continues to march towards the Gotham we saw in Future State. Mister Miracle #1 was a pleasant surprise for both Jace and Rocky, based on the Shilo Norman story we got in Future State are expectations were very low. The creative surprised us with solid art and very intriguing characterization, maybe the first true character development we have ever seen for Shilo Norman. The guys are in for at least one more issue for sure. The Other History of the DC Universe #4 is a wonderful character study of Renee Montoya, although Jace points out that it doesn't add as much new context as previous issues may have done for their characters. Batman Black & White certainly has a very Batman feel but Rocky finds this short stories for Batman just don't bring enough to the table and Jace wonders if it is time to retire this concept for a good long while. Teen Titans #3 is chaotic and Rocky loves it, but Jace is ready for more Titans in their own book and much, much less Suicide Squad. Robin #2 is a wild and fun ride for Rocky, but Jace laments some lazy storytelling and reversal in character development for Damian. The Stargirl Spring Break Special is nearly a perfect comic, both guys chose it as their favorite DC book of the week and it accomplishes this by being action-packed, brightly colored, full of hope with gorgeous art. All we can say is this creative team really understands the true heart of the DCU.

Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom! do a deep dive into Radiant Black's first four issues. The incredible twist in issue #4 has completely changed our expectations for the series and thrown a huge curveball into the narrative. The guys go back and examine the series with this big change in mind to look for added context and wonder if there were clues that might have lead them to guessing what was about to happen. They also speculate on the future of this incredible series and wonder what twists and turns might be coming next. The first part of the show is spoiler-free, but fair-warning is given and then the spoilers abound. Jace and Manny chat about the latest Star Wars Bounty Hunters Prelude. We start to see all the players being put into place as everyone converges on Nar Shadaa hoping to cash in on the bounty for Han Solo as well as Boba Fett. We feel like you get a lot more out of this issue if you have been reading Star Wars Bounty Hunters all along, but if you haven't this recap may help you to understand all the events and characters to help enrich your experience with the story.

Jace chats with superstar artist Liam Sharp about his wildly successful Kickstarter for the first of three planned artbooks. It's always a blast when these guys get together and this time is no exception. They kick off the episode with the news that just as they started recording the campaign hit it's first stretch goal which means an original 24 page comic from Liam with his character Lib Laroche. Liam also shares some details about plans for future stories with Lib. The guys also discuss Liam's love of the artbook as a medium and how it offers a chance at carrying on the legacy of the artist who influenced him. When the talk turns to Liam's current project Batman: Reptilian with Garth Ennis that leads to a discussion of the evolution of art that an artist can go through in their career and Liam shares how he hopes to show some of that change in the pages of Encore. Also the Easter eggs a few other secrets are mentioned as well as plenty of talk about the community of Kickstarter and a quick update on the Jack Katz campaign Liam ran as well. Jace and Jay give their spoiler-free thoughts on some of the books that are hitting comic stores the week of May 19, 2021. Amazing Spider-Man has a classic feel, especially with the Bagley art. How much is too much for Peter to handle? Seems like we might be on the way to finding out. Speaking of classic, Daredevil #30 has quite a few classic DD villains itself and plenty of threads coming together that may mean Matt can't handle it all if he stays behind bars. Stillwater #7 shows us the consequences of the bombing of City Hall and some members of the town may know a lot more than they have let on previously and decide to finally confide in an adult. Immortal Hulk Time of Monsters is as fascinating as it is beautiful, but what it all means for the current run of the book as it heads to its conclusion remains to be seen. Undone by Blood continues the dual narrative that we have seen throughout this title and plays it up spectacularly. Gorgeous art and colors make for a gorgeous book to look at as well. Home #2 is a very relevant and sometimes harsh look at our own political climate, but it is an important story in that it can spark conversation. Fantastic Four Life Story #1 has a lot going for it, but we wonder if too many fundamentals of relationships and team dynamics have been changed. Subsequent issues may answer that question. Way of X #2 gets even deeper into the mind of Legion and teams him up with Nightcrawler as the threat of a big time Marvel villain begins to materialize. Jay's Book of the Week Stray Dogs #4 ramps up the tension as more of the dogs seem to be coming around to Sophie's point of view. What this will mean for her dog family and especially her 'master' we will have to wait and see. The creative team behind Jace's Book of the Week has been teasing since issue #1, maybe even before, that issue #4 changes everything. Well we don't know what to think about what happens, but they weren't lying. We are certainly kept guessing and it feels like nothing in this book is off limits. What a wild ride! Jace also gives a rundown on the other titles you might want to be on the look out for.

Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom! talk about the DC offerings for the week of May 18, 2021. Before they dive into the comics hitting shops this week, there is a ton of talk about the recent news that AT&T is spinning of Warner Media and will no longer be involved in the day-to-day operations of the company. A lot of what might happen is pure speculation at this point, but with over 80 years of experience following the industry and it's ups and downs, the guys make some educated guesses on what may come next. Meanwhile, Nightwing and Catwoman continue to be the two best books DC is putting out. Both books this week offer interesting narratives and absolutely stunning art. If you aren't reading these two titles, we don't know if you can accurately call yourself a DC fan. Wonder Girl #1 is also an inspired debut with a relatability & vulnerability to Yara Flor that we haven't see before, but really enjoyed. Batman Fortnite Zero Point #3 gives fans everything they could ask for in a Batman vs Snake Eyes fight as their combat takes up nearly the entire issue. This series continues to be a lot of fun. Speaking of fun, Flash #770 is a ton of fun with it's wild time travel/speed force story. Plus Wally West/Jay Garrick gets to punch Hitler! Also we have to mention that the Jack Herbert art is stunning. Superman Red & Blue #3 is very much worth your time as some lesser known creators show they have what it takes when it comes to showcasing the emotion of the Man of Steel. Over in the pages of Justice League, we also get great art and the guys are intrigued by the story playing out for the League. Mostly they really want the back-up story starring Justice League Dark to have it's own title as the narrative is very much worthy of it's own book.

Jace chats with Matt Kindt about Whalesville, Rocks and Minerals & Eniac. They discuss the stories and themes Matt has created as well as the collaborative process he has with his artists on the books. Jace asks Matt about his love of history and tendency to explore conspiracies in his stories. They also talk about Matt's decision to work with Bad Idea and how he appreciates the creative freedom he finds when telling stories at the publisher.

Jace and Manny talk about Star Wars #13 - War of the Bounty Hunters Prelude. This is the second part of the epic story that fills in some gaps in the Star Wars universe. Not only is writer Charles Soule exploring what happened to Boba Fett after he left Cloud City to deliver Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt and collect his bounty, we get our first hints in this issue of the Jedi lessons Luke Skywalker learned after the end of the Empire Strikes back and before he showed up at Jabba's Palace himself claiming to be a full Jedi Knight. The clues in this story along with the return of a fan  favorite Wookie are very much welcome and help to enrich the story and the Star Wars universe. The art & colors are perfectly suited to the style and tone of the narrative which matches the feel of the original movies so well. The whole creative team is firing on all cylinders here.

Jace and Jay talk about some of the books hitting comic shops the week of May 12, 2021. Black Cat continues the story of a deal Felicia Hardy wishes she hadn't made. Maniac of New York is barreling toward the end of the story but whether or not our two protagonist can win the day may depend on the hint of an origin to Harry the Maniac we see in this issue. Heroes Reborn #2, Hyperion and the Imperial Guard #1 and Peter Parker Shutterbug #1 all start to flesh out the world Jason Aaron has built without the Avengers, we see some familiar faces, but without the Earth's Mightiest Heroes, things just aren't the same. Silver Coin #2 raises an interesting question about just what the coin does to the people who come to possess it, or is it the other way around? X-Corp #1 gives is a look at the cut-throat world of the boardroom in the Marvel universe as the mutants attempt to establish themselves as a corporate force promoting their pharmaceuticals. Spider-Woman #12 gives us plenty of action, but it is the surprising development in Jessica's personal life that may be the most significant part of this issue. Speaking of personal lives, Dan Slott is building plenty of inter-personal drama amongst the Fantastic Four family and we have to wonder if the team will survive the fall-out when secrets are inevitably revealed. Project Patron adds a new wrinkle to the story we thought we were getting about the dynamics of the world's most secret agency whose members are responsible for keeping the Patron active. Ice Cream Man #24 gives us a telethon wherein viewers are asked to pledge to save a man's life, so why is no one pledging? You'll have to read it to find out. Geiger #2 has a bit of a time jump from the end of #1, but it further fleshes out the world the creators are building as well as introducing some new characters we think will be pretty important moving forward. Time Before Time isn't your typical time travel story as it is firmly established that time and events cannot be altered, so why bother to time travel at all? Well turns out it is a great way to escape from people looking for you, but that is just the start of the story. Children of the Atom #3 has some big events now that we have gotten to know the team, but will our young heroes be able to survive what's coming with little experience in such monumental events? Giant Size Spider-Man King's Ransom finishes off some long-running storylines that started all the way back in Amazing Spider-Man #1, but the consequences of the events of this issue haven't even begun yet. Jace and Rocky from Comic Boom talk in depth about the DC books for the week of May 11, 2021. We have a giant-sized celebration of Asian creators and characters that clocks in at 100 pages. A new limited series that supposedly tells the last story of the Justice League kicks off with incredible art. The third issue of Batman Urban Legends continues to give us an amazing Red Hood story and the Grifter story is just as good if not better. Rorschach #8 deepens the mystery and we can't wait to see how the creative team brings it all together. Superman #31 has a VERY appropriate line from Jon Kent we hope DC takes to heart even if the rest of the story is only ok. Future State Gotham leaves a lot to be desired and as of the first issue we recommend you skip it. The second issue of Batman the Detective sets up some big events for the series that could tie into Bruce's past. Wonder Woman #772 gives us more of the crossover between the Norse and Greek mythologies and we feel it is working very well. Finally the Joker title continues to star Jim Gordon and we couldn't be happier with how it has played out so far, superb.
